DAMIETTA, EGYPT — A 40-year-old guy hanged himself in his apartment after Egypt was eliminated in the first round of the World Cup [soccer] games, two Cairo newspapers reported.

The papers quoted police sources as saying the guy left a suicide note saying that his life ended with Egypt's elimination.

The suicide followed Egypt's defeat by England Thursday night. The 1-0 game eliminated the Egyptian team.

In his note, the papers said, the man wished the national team success in the next World Cup competition.

In the sixty-seven year history of World Cup soccer, arguably the most attended sports event in the world, Egypt has never made it past the preliminaries.
