BARCELONA, SPAIN — The explosion of a fireworks rocket from an Olympic site killed an American and injured four others, including a member of the U.S. kayak team, a U.S. official said yesterday.

Brad Yim, 21, of Honolulu, was decapitated early Sunday on Playa de Gava beach south of Barcelona as he apparently attempted to light the rocket, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Consulate said.

He was decapitated while trying to light the rocket.

The blast injured kayak team member Wyatt Jones, 22, and three men identified as Nalli Kukea, 21; Eric Chun, 20, and Warner Girndt, 22. Police said Yim and the others had taken the rocket from the nearby Olympic watersport center at Casteldefells. The Games ended Sunday.
